DNS stands
for domain name system. Every web site has an IP (Internet
Protocol) address (a string of numbers similar to a
phone number) that directs web surfers to its location.
The DNS assigns a name that makes it easier for people

have been designated recently to accommodate the ever

FTP |
File Transfer
Protocol. The process used to transfer files on the
internet. Usually used to upload web site files to a
web hosting service. Some popular FTP Software: WS-FTP
Pro or CuteFTP. |
Hit |
The retrieval
of any item from a web server. A Hit is not a good indicator
or traffic to a site as it includes any file type on
the page viewed. For example a page might include 4
graphics, 1 page and maybe a style file. That one page
view would register 6 hits. |
HTML |
Short for Hyper
Text Markup Language. The authoring language used to
create documents for use on the web. |
HTTP |
Short for
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. The method used to transfer
web pages on the world wide web. |
IMAP |
Internet
Message Access Protocol. A protocol used to retrieve
email from an email server. |
Impression |
An advertisers
appearance on an accessed page view. A measurement of
how many times an ad is viewed. |
IP |
Internet Protocol.
The numerical address for a web site. |
Javascript |
A scripting
language useful in developing dynamic web sites. |
Meta Tag |
A tag within
the source code of an html document used to describe
the contents of a web page. Some search engines use
the meta description and meta keywords tags to index
web sites. |
MIME |
Multipurpose
Internet Mail Extensions. A specification for formatting
non-text messages for retrieval over the internet or
by email. E-mail clients use to read graphic, audio
or video files. |
POP |
Short for Post
Office Protocol. Protocol used to retrieve email from
an email server. Many web hosting accounts include a
POP email account. |
Registrar |
To get a domain
name one must register for it with an accredited registrar.
In the pioneer days of web sites, the only source for
obtaining a web address was through Network Solutions.
Fortunately, there are now many accredited registrars.

Simple Mail
Transfer Protocol. Protocol commonly used to send mail
over the internet - to an email server. POP3 or IMAP

An automatic
system used to retrieve and automatically add pages

SSL |
Short for Secure
Sockets Layer, a protocol for transmitting private documents
via the internet. SSL should be used when transmitting
any sensitive information like credit card numbers.
By convention, SSL pages begin with https instead of
http. Some current browsers indicate when you are on
a secure page with a closed lock usually located on
bottom right of the screen. |

Unique Resource
Locater. The first section of an URL consists of the
protocol (http) the second consists of the domain (cgwebhelp.com)
and the third defines the path to the file on the domain.
